The use of soldier piles with horizontal lagging, known also as Berlin Method, because it was originally used for the Berlin subway prior to the Second World War.

The use of Berlin Method should be limited to shallow excavation in relatively dry or dewatered soils.

The soldier piles may be driven or installed in a predrilled borehole.
